Mise en scene Preliminary Exercise

Mise en scene The objective of the lesson on November 30, 2021 is to identify the elements of mise en scene and define them. Mis en scene is the setting or surroundings of an event or action, typically seen in films, theatricals or television productions. This can be anything from colors, lighting, composition, set design, setting, acting, and costumes. This is important in films to turn moving images into a message or art form that audiences can decode. Designing, blocking, arranging objects and framing are elements of mise en scene that create meaning in a shot. On this day, we were assigned a digital graphic organizer or table to show what are the elements of mise en scene, define them, and document how they create meaning in a scene. These elements include setting, acting, costume, set design/props, composition, and lighting. Mis en scene is the placement of actors and scenery on a theatrical stage, film, or television production. This elevates film from a series of moving ima...

Film Codes and genre Conventions Preliminary Exercise 1

Symbolic Codes Closed reading of VALERIAN Official Trailer #1 (2017) On November 16th, 2021 my instructor introduced a lesson surrounding symbolic codes in films. I learned that codes are a set of conventions, which an audience uses to make sense of a media text. Additionally, codes are systems of signs which create meaning. Being anything that is visual or symbolic, technical, auditory or written in media text such as films. Furthermore, these messages and meanings in media texts such as film as encoded by media producers and decoded by audiences. The key idea expressed in our lesson were symbolic codes. Symbolic codes are the visual elements that connote meaning in a media text, and technical codes being the codes that result from how a media text is constructed. Some examples of symbolic codes include setting/set/location, acting, costumes, hair and make-up, color, tone, props and lighting. Symbolic codes are used in films to show the deeper meaning of what we see, hear and fee...

Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 3

Charles Peirce's Theory of Semiotics In addition to Roland Barthes and Ferdinand De Saussure's theories on Semiotics is Charles Pierces. Charles Peirce is an American philosopher who introduced the idea that semiotics is the relationship between three key parts: symbols, icons, and indexes. To begin with, symbolic signs are signs that have no physical relationship between the signifier and signified. Where the signifier is something purely conventional and culturally specific. This can include symbols of a dove, heart and peace sign, indicating love and prosperity. Secondly, Iconic signs are signs that mimic the signified. For this, the signifier and signified relationship is straight forward. One example of an iconic sign is the skull symbol, which represents death. lastly, Indexical signs are signs where the signifier is directly caused by the signified factor. For example, smoke enveloping an area signifies a potential fire. Spider-man: Far from home - Ending Swing scene: ...

Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 2

Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics  Another concept introduced in class was Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics. Ferdinand de Saussure's is a swiss linguist who theorized that a sign is made up of two key elements, the signifier and the signified. A signifier is a sign's physical form like sound, printed word, motion, a gesture, event, pattern or image. On the other hand, the signified is the meaning or idea expressed or conveyed by the signifier. For example, a vase of roses can be seen as the signifier, while the idea that love is conveyed through the flowers is the signified part. Ferdinand De Saussure believed that semiotics is a scientific discipline and referred to it differently as semiology. Emphasizing how written or spoken language is the primary form of communication between people, but not the only form. Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 1

Roland Barthes Theory of Semiotics A concept introduced in class was the Roland Bathes Theory of Semiotics. Roland Bathes is a French theorist that analyzed the use of denotative and connotative signs with an additional component that included the creation of social myth. We learned that films communicate with their audience denotatively and connotatively. Where the elements that define connotative meaning is the sounds and images used to evoke certain feelings from the viewers and denotive meaning is defined as what the audience sees and hears. Furthermore, films use denotative and connotative signs to engage their audience visually and emotionally. Denotative signs being the literal, primary or original meaning, while connotative signs are the multiple meanings behind an idea in a film. Lastly, Bathes introduced the concept of myth, which are shared cultural connotations that reflect the dominant ideology.  Myths are seen as a significant idea that helps to establish ideolo...

Welcome To My AICE Media Studies Blog!

The importance of Media Studies is to learn how a diverse platform of Media interacts with a general audience through processes such as Marketing. Giving people a sense of how Media affects the world, especially in a era where technology has dramatically advanced.  My favorite media products or texts are videogames, social media, and movies. Out of these three, I mostly consume social media and movies. For instance, platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter are among the most consumed apps that I have used. Furthermore, I enjoy a wide range of movies from platforms like Netflix and Hulu. In Media Studies it is important to understand who, why, how, or when media is used to engage audiences. Knowing “who” is being engaged by a Media gives you an idea of an audiences’ interests and beliefs. This correlates to “why” media engages audiences, which is to gain more consumers and ultimately increase profit. This could be through marketing strategies such as commercials, interviews,...
