Camera Movement Techniques in Moving Images

Camera Movement Techniques in Film On February 16, 2022, my group and I were assigned to make a storyboard of camera movement techniques in film. These techniques include static, zoom out, trucking, pan, tracking, random, tilt, zoom in, and arch shot movements. First, we defined each technique on our storyboard, then write out a scenario that exemplifies that specific technique. This can be seen below.

Genre Lighting Research and Analysis (Group Assignment)

Genre Lighting Research and Analysis (PowerPoint Group Assignment) On February 9th, 2022, my group and I were given the task to analyze and document the source, direction, quality of the lighting used to support the overall connotations of our action genre, theme, tone and meaning of the two films we chose, which are Dr. Strange and Captain America: Civil War. My first teammate Dillon Wilson worked on direction, which included side lighting, back lighting, top lighting, front lighting and underlighting. My second teammate, Jonathan Spence, worked on the general information and synopsis of the films we chose and light color. My last teammate, Nicholas Davila, worked on the light source slides, which included natural lighting, practical lighting, and ambient lighting. Lastly, I worked on lighting set up, which included key lighting, fill lighting and back light, and the light quality slides.

Genre Lighting Research and Analysis (Group Assignment)

Genre Lighting Mindmap Poster On February 7th, 2022, my group and I started to discuss the outline of what the intended genre for our film was going to be. With this, we were prompted to answer 5 questions to get a basic understanding of what genre we will use and the lighting techniques that would be best to support our film opening genre. Additionally, we chose 2 films that were associated with our genre to research and analyze the lighting techniques used. 1. The intended genre of our film is action 2. 2 themes associated with my film's genre are fighting scenes and explosions 3. Dramatic and scary tones are often associated with my film's genre 4. High-key lighting, three-point lighting, and hard & sift lighting best support my action genre 5. The two films that I will be researching and analyzing is Dr. Strange and Captain America: Civil War

Camera Composition Storyboard Poster (Group Assignment)

Camera Composition Storyboard Poster This is the last part of the camera composition assignment, where my teammates and I come up with 8 frames using 8 of the compositional techniques we analyzed and put it on a storyboard. A storyboard is a sequence of drawings or illustrations used to visualize a shot or frame. For this assignment, we came up with a description for each frame and put it on our poster or storyboard. The description line included the character's name, action, and location where the hand-drawn frame is taking place. Lastly, we had to document the camera shot size, angle, and camera framing of the frames we drew. An example of this is shown below.  Since Brian Mareus was the best drawer in our group, he was responsible for drawing the images we came up with for each of the techniques: Rule of Thirds, Symmetry, Assymtrey, Leading Lines, Shapes, Deep Focus/ Shallow Focus, Foreground in Focus/ Out of Focus, and Background in Focus/Out of Focus. The rest of the gro...

Camera Composition in Film Preliminary Exercise Group Assignment

Camera Composition in Film Group Assignment  This post will be about the second part of the camera composition in film assignment where we discuss the different techniques we analyzed individually. First of all, my teammates for this assignment were Jonathan Spence, Malachi Scott, and Brian Mareus.  Jonathan worked on Balance: Asymmetry and Blocking: Leading Lines, Brian worked on Blocking: Shapes and Deep Depth of Field, while Malachi worked on Deep Depth of Field and Shallow Depth of Feld.  Jonthan's analyzation gave me insight into how asymmetrical balance is used in films to make a scene look out of balance, but still visually appealing to an audience eyes; Additionally, I learned that leading lines in films are used to control what and how the audience sees a subject.  Brian analyzation gave me insight into how blocking: shapes are crucial in films as the position of actors on set can affect their performance, and that deep depths of field are used in shot...

Camera Composition in Film Preliminary Exercise (Individual Task)

Camera Composition in Film (Individual Task) The assignment that I will be introducing are the 2 camera composition techniques each member of my group had to analyze individually. Camera composition is how the elements of a frame are arranged. This is an important element in filming used to direct the audiences eye, keeping them interested in the set of frames shown to them. Cinematographers are responsible for carrying out camera composition in films and it is their job to create the look, color, lighting, and suitable framing of every shot in a film. The key concepts of this idea include the Rule of Thirds, Balance, Depth of Field, and Camera Work. The techniques that I worked on individually are Rule of Thirds and Balance: Symmetry.  The two techniques that I was responsible for in my group is the rule of thirds and balance: symmetry. My assignment was to document the definition and purpose of these concepts and provide a frame from a movie and document why the specific te...

Lighting in Film

Lighting in Film In this blog, I will be analyzing what is lighting, who is responsible for creating lighting in films, and the definitions of elements of lighting. Additionally, I will list a well-known individual in the industry and define their style.  First of all, lighting is the changes in light due to the time of day, season or geographical location. Its primary purpose in films is to create visual moods, atmospheres, and a sense of meaning for the audience.  The person responsible for creating lighting on a film set is the cinematographer. This position comes with the responsibility of directing the camera and lighting crew, capturing the directors vision, and creating suitable frames for a film by assessing elements such as the composition, color, and exposure of the shot.   A well-known individual in the film industry is an American filmmaker named Wes Anderson. Wes Anderson is known for his individualistic, detailed, and symmetrical film making. Some...
